Doing so will help you find a place to escape. Rather than being a confined space of stress and clutter, it will be a meditative spa where everything is organized and has a specific spot. See below for several ways that you can start to bring organization back into your bathroom and breathe a sigh of relief whenever you step into it.
1. Purge Your Bathroom(s)
Before you start cleaning and reorganizing the bathroom(s) in your house, it’s time to take a hard look in the mirror with the items that you have inside them. Odds are that your decluttering is mainly due to an excess of stuff. Stuff that you no longer need for. Stuff that you and your kids have outgrown or don’t use anymore. It’s time to purge, people. Unload all of the items in or on your drawers, shelves, and counters, and ask yourself one question: Do I/we still need this? This isn’t just in regards to the products you have such as toothpaste, hair products, etc. It can also apply to the decorations filling up counter space, towel racks your family doesn’t actually hang their towels on, and so on.
2. Prioritize Makeup Organization
Perhaps you’re the type that only has a few go-to makeup essentials. Maybe you’re big into makeup and like to experiment with different looks from time to time. Whatever the case might be, you probably have a good amount of makeup products in your bathroom. Without a place to store them, the bathroom sink or cabinets can quickly become a jumbled mess of makeup products. You’ll have a hard time finding things like specific brushes, mirrors, lipstick, palettes, and so on. Search here for different makeup drawer inserts that you can purchase to place inside of your bathroom drawers. You’ll find that the organization of your drawers makes it easier to find makeup items. While it might be an adjustment at first, it will eventually help you save off precious minutes from your morning routine.
3. Use Your Bathroom Closet for Linens
Shockingly, most homeowners don’t know how to properly use the closet that’s located in their bathroom. Most people feel that it’s a great place to store items that you don’t want to be seen anywhere else. Others use it as an excuse to stock up on an unnecessary excess of bathroom items, such as soap and makeup products, to store inside it. The truth is that it shouldn’t be used for either. Instead, you should use your bathroom closet exclusively for linens, and bathroom essentials—such as toilet paper and Kleenex tissues. Start by getting rid of all linens that you no longer use. Sort them by category such as bath towels, dish towels, beach towels, hand towels, toilet seat covers, and so on. If you’re looking to keep an eye-appealing aesthetic, then you can also sort them by the linen’s size and color. Purchase some bins to place the different linens inside of, then label the bin to help you and your guests locate them.
4. Be Minimal With Your Shower and Bathtub
Contrary to what the bathing products industry will tell you, there are very few things that you need to keep in your shower or bathtub. All you really need is shampoo, conditioner, and your preference for body soap. Of course, some of you keep razors in your showers, along with shower cream, and even toothpaste for those of you that brush your teeth in the shower. We’re not here to judge! All we encourage is that you take some time to assess your showering/bathing routine and which products you actually use in it. Purchase a shower caddy to place those items inside, then you’re all set!
5. Clear Out Your Medicine Cabinet
Everything has a shelf life, ladies and gentlemen, and medication is certainly no exception. Go through your medicine cabinet and find anything that’s expired, then toss it! While you’re there, use the freed-up space to place certain items off your bathroom counter and into a stored area. Can your toothbrush fit in it? Your mouthwash? Your razor? The idea here is to minimize the items on your bathroom counters and into storage places that hide them from plain sight but keep them within reach.
6. Use the Daily or Don’t Rule
Perhaps you’re finding it difficult to gauge whether or not certain items need to stay in your bathroom or not. For all of those items that you’re questioning, ask yourself this question: Do I or don’t I use this item daily? If the answer is “no”, then it shouldn’t be in plain sight. This rule helps you value what’s important to keep handy. Toothbrush? Check. Hand soap? Check. Candles for a relaxing shower? Check. That hideous hand towel that your mother-in-law bought you? Eh, better to store it away!
